Why Indian AI products are undervalued in Korea — and what to check

Reviewing Indian AI products tends to produce the same impression: the capability is there, but something feels uncertain. Much of that uncertainty comes from information asymmetry, not from the product.

Why undervalued What to check Real risks

The short answer

What undervalues Indian products in Korea is exposure, not quality. No local media coverage, no Korean-language material, and no domestic reference when you ask. Those three together make a good product look unvetted.

There are also real risks: support hours, Korean handling, regulatory certification, contract structure. This post does not recommend Indian products — it separates the undervaluation from the real risk.

Four things that create undervaluation — none of them about the product

No local exposure — Without local media and community coverage, searching returns nothing. Reading absence of information as risk is a natural response, but absence of information is not quality.
No Korean-language material — Documentation and cases only in English raise your internal review load. That is a real adoption cost, but unrelated to capability.
No domestic reference — With no answer to "who in Korea uses this", approval gets harder. The burden of being first is real, but it is not a product defect.
The low price itself — Half the price for the same capability reads as something missing. Interpreting a labour-cost-driven price difference as a quality difference is the most common misjudgement.

The risks that are real

Item Why it is a real risk How to check
Support hours IST is 3.5 hours behind KST, affecting incident response Get support hours and escalation procedure in writing
Korean handling quality Products built on English-centric data can differ Test on your real documents and enquiries
Data storage location Decisive where domestic storage is required Check region options and sub-processors
Regulatory certification Hardware needs KC, medical needs an MFDS path Get the Korean approval status in writing
Contract structure Direct foreign contracting raises law, jurisdiction and billing issues Whether a Korean reseller route exists
Company durability Early-stage companies carry service continuity risk Funding stage, customer count, data exportability

The order — separate undervaluation from risk

Test capability and quality on your real tasks first. At this stage, ignore the country of origin. Judging only the output keeps the undervaluation factors out of it.

Then fill in the six real risks above. Failing here is legitimate failure — if support hours or data location do not meet your requirements, product quality is irrelevant.

Then choose from what remains. Keeping that order stops you rejecting things because they "feel uncertain", and equally stops you overlooking a real risk because the price was attractive.

Frequently asked questions

Should we adopt a product with no domestic reference?

There is risk, but it is manageable. Start small on reversible work, secure data exportability in the contract, and keep a fallback — that substantially reduces the burden of being first.

Why should a low price not be suspicious?

There is reason to ask. But establish the cause: a labour-cost difference is rational; a difference created by removing features, support or certification is a problem. The six items above make that distinction.

How do we handle the support hours problem?

IST is 3.5 hours behind KST, so morning overlap is limited. Put escalation procedures and response commitments in the contract, or secure first-line response through a Korean partner.

Which categories are worth looking at?

In the catalogue, Indian products are concentrated in data and development, customer support, commerce and healthcare. But reviewing individual products in the order above is more accurate than judging by category.
